Important Information about Fillings
Cavities can form at any age – from the very youngest patient to the most elderly. If and when a cavity forms, it’s very important to have it filled as quickly as possible. Cavities can weaken your teeth, which makes it much easier to chip or break a tooth. Just as concerning is the fact that cavities left untreated can form infections within the tooth, and that can necessitate a root canal procedure.
In order to provide his patients with the widest array of options possible, Dr. Robertson offers several different types of fillings:
- Amalgam Fillings – Silver amalgam material has been used for fillings for many decades. This traditional filling material is extremely strong and durable, which makes it a great choice for large cavities that will have to endure a lot of heavy chewing. Some people have expressed concerns in the past about the amount of mercury present in silver amalgam, but there has never been any conclusive evidence that this material is unhealthy as it is used in dentistry.
- Composite Fillings – Tooth-colored composite fillings have become increasingly popular over the past few years and with good reason. Not only can the color of the composite material be altered to almost exactly match the shade of your natural teeth, the composite material is also extremely durable. While composite fillings are very strong, they’re not quite as durable as silver amalgam fillings, which makes composite an excellent choice for medium-sized cavities.
- Ionomer Fillings – This filling material is comprised of glass particles mixed with acrylic acids. Similar to composite fillings, ionomer fillings are the same color as your natural teeth, which makes them nearly invisible. Because ionomer is less durable than either amalgam or composite, it should be used only on very small cavities, and it’s particularly useful in cavities that affect the root of a tooth.
